广东高明人，字用儒，号海目。区益子。善为文，下笔千言立就。万历十七年进士。初选庶吉士，累迁赞善、中允。掌制诰。居翰院十五年，与赵志皋、张位、沈一贯等有旧。赵等先后当国，大相皆引避不轻谒。后调南太仆寺丞，以疾归，卒。工诗词，皆严于格律，为明代岭南大家。有《太史集》、《图南集》、《濠上集》。
