释慧方，号超宗，俗姓龚，临江（今江西樟树西南）人。十七岁试经得度，历参名宿，执侍悟新禅师十四年。徽宗宣和中，初住隆庆寺，迁住吉州禾山寺、洪州云岩寺。为南岳下十四世，黄龙死心悟新禅师法嗣。有《超宗慧方禅师语录》一卷（收入《续藏经》）。《嘉泰普灯录》卷一○、《五灯会元》卷一八有传。今录诗三十九首。
