释祖元，号枯木，俗姓林，长乐（今属福建）人。初竭雪峰预禅师，次依佛心才禅师，后参妙喜于海上洋屿庵。高宗绍兴十九年（一一四九），住温州雁山能仁寺。为南岳下十六世，径山宗杲禅师法嗣。《嘉泰普灯录》卷一八、《五灯会元》卷二○、《补续高僧传》卷一一有传。今录诗六首。
