这茫茫的大地既然经过了造物主炉火的冶炼，怎能不带上寒颓衰冷的外观？你看古往今来沧海桑田，但只见废弃的兵垒上弥漫着野烟，古台的遗址上树木参天。
放目远眺，太行山脉就像长长的磨刀石，黄河也缩成了带子一般，它们都混迹于尘埃之间。用不着更生悲叹，说那花儿开了又落，春天去了又返。

大块：大地，大自然。
洪炉：造物主的冶炉。
垒：用于战守的工事。
太行：山脉名，在黄河北，绵亘山西、河南、河北三省。
砺：磨刀石。
黄河如带：《史记》载汉高祖刘邦曾在封爵时有誓言，有“使河如带，泰山若厉（砺）”语，意谓即使黄河变成了狭窄的衣带，泰山变成细平的磨刀石，国祚依然长久。后人因有“带砺山河”的成语。此处仅在字面上借用了《史记》的成句。

元代至元十九年（1282年），刘因拜为承德郎、右赞善大夫，不久因母疾辞归，专研理学，该小令就创作于此时期。

人月圆·茫茫大块洪炉里鉴赏
这是一首登临之作，具体的地点已不可详，总之是太行、黄河地区的一所古台，附近还有废弃的军事工事，气象十分荒凉。
上片以“茫茫大块洪炉里”开头，作者并不直接从具体的景观着手，而是扩大到无垠的空间，也就是一片天地洪荒的景象。同样，在点出眼前的废垒遗台时，复用“古今多少”的感慨，又将时间从眼下的登台时分有意识地无限扩展。这种苍茫、深沉的心绪，使读者自然而然体会到作者登临所览的荒败，且意识到此非天然而乃人为，也即是政治和战争所造成的破坏结果。
下片“太行如砺，黄河如带”借用了“带砺山河”的成语，而又是登览的实景，“等是尘埃”便带上了总结和象征的双关意味。从总结的一面说，作者登临之古台台势高拔，迥出地表，远方的太行山脉与黄河长流，都分别变成了小小的磨刀石及细带子，那么处在视野中的人间景物，就更微茫若尘，“等是尘埃”正是一种张大形势的说法。从象征的一面说，“尘埃”微不足道，处在微尘中的世界也不值得去认真看待。既然山河会因人事的兴废而“寒灰”、而“尘埃”，那么时光的流逝、万物的变化又有什么可叹惜的呢。下片的前三句回照空间，后三句回照时间，再度从扩张的境界中充实了上片的感慨。

刘因（1249～1293） 元代著名理学家、诗人。字梦吉，号静修。初名骃，字梦骥。雄州容城（今河北容城县）人。3 岁识字，6岁能诗，10岁能文，落笔惊人。年刚20，才华出众，性不苟合。家贫教授生徒，皆有成就。因爱诸葛亮“静以修身”之语，题所居为“静修”。元世祖至元十九年(1282)应召入朝，为承德郎、右赞善大夫。不久借口母病辞官归。母死后居丧在家。至元二十八年，忽必烈再度遣使召刘因为官，他以疾辞。死后追赠翰林学士、资政大夫、上护军、追封“容城郡公”，谥“文靖”。明朝，县官乡绅为刘因建祠堂。
