[约公元九o九年前后在世]字休明，桂阳（今湖南桂阳）人（全唐诗云：一云婺州人），生卒年均不详，约梁太祖开平中前后在世。少师林宽为诗，不惮风雪。仕楚，累为县令，后署天策府学士，终严州刺史。著有诗集一卷，《全唐诗》存15首传于世。刘昭禹勤奋好学，早夕吟索诗句，自谓：“句向夜深得，心从天外归。”他擅长五言诗，创作态度十分严谨，曾经评论做诗：“五言如四十贤人，著一屠沽不得”，“索句如获五匣，精求必得其宝。”他为人虚心，不忌贤才，一次见到外地人石文德的诗篇，深为叹服，便竭力向马希范推荐，使之亦成为天策府学士。
