释道潜，本名昙潜，号参寥子，赐号妙总大师。俗姓王，钱塘（今浙江杭州）人（《续骫骳说》）。一说姓何，于潜（今浙江临安西南）人（《咸淳临安志》卷七○）。幼即出家为僧，能文章，尤喜为诗。与苏轼、秦观友善，常有倡和。哲宗绍圣间，苏轼贬海南，道潜亦因诗获罪，责令还俗。徽宗建中靖国元年（一一○一），曾肇为之辩解，复为僧。崇宁末归老江湖。其徒法颖编有《参寥子诗集》十二卷，行于世。
