唐太宗的才人武则天后来成为唐高宗的皇后，高宗死后，中宗年幼，她自己临朝听政。中宗逐渐长大可以处理国家大事，武后不肯放权。大臣苏安桓上一篇奏疏让她归政于中宗，提醒她注意物极必反、器满则盈。武则天没有采纳。
